Authentic Self Vs. The Ego
Authentic Self Vs. The Ego
Psychology has always been a science that has intrigued me. I was in 10th Grade, I remember, when the theories of Sigmund Freud first exposed me to the word ‘controversial’. If it had pictures, it would have been a book you would sneak underneath your bed. Freud’s various theories of psychosexual development and its impacts on the different personalities, he believed, lay foundation to who we become in this world. So, let’s go back to the Id, Ego & Superego.
So the Id is the me and what I need.
The Ego is our immediate conscious world.
And, the Superego is our subconscious mind.
Everything we have experienced remains in our conscious mind and, on most occasions, makes up who we are. It remains buried and only activated once triggered.
The false power of the ego vs the authentic self
The ego is defensive and acts as a mechanism to protect us from the things that may hurt us-especially emotionally. It is unreal and fearful. We have been taught to believe that the ego is what keeps us alive and protects us from harm when, in reality, it is the most destructive. It dissociates you from your true self, it is a ‘wanna be’, a false you.

Eckhart Tolle describes the ego’s search for wholeness in his book The Power of Now:
‘The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, person and family history, belief systems, and often also political, nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications. None of these is you.’
We are constantly bombarded with images and messages of things around us telling us that we are not enough. No thing or material possession ever defined who you really are.
In the words of Deepak Chopra:
‘If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It’s very important to be aware of them every time they come up.’
